Yesterday, with our local homeschool group and friends, we went to a strawberry patch to pick strawberries. I know I'm not a garden type of person whether it's veggies/ fruit or flowers. And I've successfully passed the torch down to my children. So, at this stage in my life, I 'm trying to do better for the girls so they aren't as clueless as I am when it comes to these kind of matters.
I knew I had failed yesterday morning when Emily said she was going to pick all the strawberries she can reach. Yikes. I had never taught her that they grow on the ground. Well, she knows now. She spent most of her time eating the strawberries she had picked! Every time I turned around, her basket was practically empty and she had a strawberry in her mouth.
Rebecca learned all kinds of things from Mrs. Gracie, another homeschool mom. Gracie has her own garden on a nice piece of land in the country and was kind enough to share some of her wisdom with Rebecca. She showed her what to look for in a good, sweet strawberry as well as the proper was to pick it. Rebecca, being the flower picking person she is, was shown that that was not a good thing to do and why. In the slide show above, you can see that the flowers are what grow into strawberries. Something I didn't know. We both learned a great deal yesterday.
Gracie also showed the girls some deer tracks made in the ground right at the fields. She also showed them a bird that was protecting it's eggs. It was getting pretty riled up at all the children that were trying to get too close. I can't remember the name of the bird and I tried looking it up to no avail. Oh well, hope you enjoy the pictures.

Hey Shea!
Do you mind me asking which berry patch you went to? Our group doesn't want to go to the Ch'field patch because of the $5 charge just to get to the field. I was thinking of going to Walthall. But I haven't been in over 10 years and don't know what it's like now.
